1/2 c. butter
1/2 c. Crisco
1 c. sugar
2 tsp. vanilla
2/3 c. Evalporated milk
Make sure butter and Crisco are room temperature, then put all ingredients together and beat for about 30 minutes constantly. It may look sort of curdled but the last 10 minutes it becomes creamy.
Substitute for evaporated milk
1. Mix 1 cup whole milk with 1 teaspoon sugar and 1-1/2 teaspoon cornstarch. Heat until it starts to thicken or simmer. DO NOT BOIL!
OR
2. Mix 2/3 cup non-fat dry milk with 3/4 cup water. Makes 1 cup (8 oz).
Substitute for cornstarch
Use twice the amount of flour that the recipe calls for. For example, to replace 1 Tbs cornstarch, use 2 Tbs of all-purpose flour. Only do this in small amounts though, no more than 2 Tbs.
